Life's most persistent and urgent question is:  "What are you doing for others?"
Dr Martin Luther King, Jr

Parish Mission and Outreach

The mission of the Church is not to subsidise its existence.  We are called by God through Jesus Christ to faithfully engage with the world around to proclaim the transformation of the Gospel and to participate in the coming of the Kingdom of God.  As St James wrote, "faith without works is dead", and so we dedicate approximately ten percent of our annual freewill offering to making our faith come alive in the world.  The Parish assists with a number of activities in Tyendinaga and the wider world.  Our assistance is primarily financial but Parish members dedicate countless hours of volunteer ministry to a wide number of endeavours throughout the year.

Beneficiaries of the outreach ministry of the Parish include:

  • Bike for Bibles, a ministry whose aim is to raise funds for the provision of Bibles through the Canadian Bible Society.  In July 2008, the Parish hosted the bikers as they cycled across southern Ontario and we contributed $1179 to the cause.
  • An on-going donation to the Special Needs class at Quinte Mohawk School to purchase supplies and teaching aids that would not otherwise be bought with government funding.
  • Operation Christmas Child (shoeboxes of much-needed supplies sent to developing countries around the world at Christmastime each year).
  • The Primate's World Relief and Development Fund
  • The Bishop's Discretionary Fund
  • The Rector's Discretionary Fund
  • Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory Food Bank (food and monetary donations)
  • Deseronto Helping Hands Food Bank (food and monetary donations)
  • Council of the North (subsidisation of ministry in the Canadian North)
  • Salvation Army (Belleville and Napanee)
  • Town of Deseronto Summer Youth Programming
  • Tyendinaga Angel Tree Program
  • Club Amick Book Club for Aboriginal Youth
  • Rebuilding Fund of the Haudenosaunee Longhouse, Tyendinaga
  • Families in distress (due to illness, fire, etc)
  • Financial Assistance to a community member selected to represent First Nations art at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics

Arms-Length Mission and Outreach

Love in Action

A group of people who raise money for mission.  The group, consisting of a number of Tyendinaga parishioners, divides its money into three categories:  local, provincial/national, and international.  Some examples of organisations that have benefited from Love in Action's fundraising efforts are:  Ministry in Kashechewan, Buy-A-Bet Malaria Prevention, AIDS Walk for Life, Cots for Kids, Sleeping Children Around the World, Bees for Babar, and a whole host of other educational, developmental, and mission-oriented agencies.  The group's major fundraisers each year are an evening play at the Selby Theatre in the spring and a Tea and Bazaar held in November in Deseronto.

Mohawk Guild

The Mohawk Guild is a group, mostly comprised of women from Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory, that exists to provide support in the community.  Modelled on the Anglican Church Women, this group has expanded to include women from outside the Parish and regularly provides services to members of the community.  The Guild often caters large gatherings such as funeral receptions and the Graduation Dinner for Quinte Mohawk School each June.

Tyendinaga Food Bank

Although the Food Bank is not a ministry of the Parish of Tyendinaga, each church devotes one Sunday per month where parishioners are encouraged to bring a donation to the food bank and monetary donations are made several times each year.  Several of our parishioners are volunteers at the food bank, as well, making this vital community ministry near to the hearts of many people in our churches.

If you, or anyone you know, might benefit from any of the above services, please contact the Rector.  Your confidentiality is assured.
